SELF-CONSUMPTION TO REDUCE ENERGY POVERTY

At acciona.org we are promoting a new initiative with the aim of contributing to the reduction of energy poverty in Spain. We do this through collective self-consumption in the type of surplus with compensation provided for RD 244/2019. This decree regulates the administrative, technical and economic conditions for self-consumption of electricity in the country.

In Spain, according to the National Strategy against Energy Poverty (2019-2024), there are between 3.5 and 8.1 million people in energy poverty. Energy poverty is defined as "the situation of a household in which the basic energy supply needs cannot be pay because there is insufficient income level and, in addition, where the situation may be aggravated by not having an energy efficient home" (Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge).

Due to this situation, we promote projects in collaboration with the City Councils of the people benefited and we installed, together, a solar plant system in a public building. Then, we operate the plant to allocate a percentage of the energy generated, free of charge, to reduce the electricity bills of households in risk of poverty. The energy generated and not consumed by the households will be used by public buildings, reducing their carbon footprint.
