Nowdays, 3.5 billion people still live without safe sanitation and more than 673 million people still practice outdoor defecation. These practices facilitate the spread of diseases that kill 1,000 children under the age of five every day, according to the UN.

Since 2018, acciona.org has been working to reduce the number of people suffering from a lack of safe sanitation in Mexico. Isolated communities in rural areas of Oaxaca benefit from access to safe sanitation with the EncASa (Energy with Water and Sanitation) initiative, which installs safe toilets through a sustainable and circular model that ensures safe access to the toilet, reduces disease, creates fertilizer from the waste itself, and provides a basic hand washing facility.
Access to proper sanitation helps prevent environmental pollution and the spread of disease, improving people's health, well-being and human development.
