The acciona.org’s EncASa Oaxaca programme has been selected as a finalist in the European Business Awards for the Environment within the “Developing Country Cooperation” category and it has been a nominee to the European competition of these recognitions. acciona.org carries out this initiative in public-private partnership for development with the Government of the State of Oaxaca’s Infrastructure and Sustainable Territory Development Secretariat –so called SINFRA–, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation –so called AECID– and its Mexican counterpart –AMEXCID–.

Up to now, EncASa Oaxaca has benefited more than 1,100 families with access to mainly electricity, as well as to drinking water, appropriate sanitation and improved cook stoves in more than 100 rural Oaxaca communities. It brings access to electricity with solar home systems not having heavy metals, not emitting CO2 and allowing the connection and charging of electric devices avoiding the use and uncontrolled disposal of batteries in rural, sensitive areas. It also offers cook systems saving firewood and so avoids deforestation. In addition, it provides water & sanitation systems favouring the reuse of water and saving water in rural Oaxaca, where there is a recurring drought; that is, it is a tool of increasing the resilience and adaptation to climate change.

acciona.org develops this programme following its unique activity model, which is based on bringing the ACCIONA’s services & infrastructures where the work of the business units is unfeasible due to the lack of market conditions –communities in extreme poverty–, the search of the long-term sustainability of its initiatives by developing service delivery models adapted to every context, and the cooperation with other actors having development objectives with which it shares achievements and responsibilities. This last aspect is what recognizes the “Developing Country Cooperation” category of the European Business Awards for the Environment, whose organization is going to spread, in the next weeks, the winners of these prestigious awards in Spain, as well as at the European level.
