LIGHT AT HOME EL NIDO PILOT

Renewable electricity supply project in the Philippines

CLEAN ENERGY FOR POOR ISOLATED RURAL AREAS OF EL NIDO

We have implemented, in partnership with the Ayala Foundation, the Light at Home El Nido pilot project in the Philippines in 2022. Our activity starts in El Nido, a Philippine municipality in the province of Palawan. Specifically, we work with the population of the barangay (municipality) Sibaltan, which lacks access to and expectation to recive electricity by conventional means.

As an alternative, more than half of the households in barangay Sibaltan used fuel to generate electricity. These unsafe methods cause health problems for people due to smoke inhalation and pollute the environment in which they live by emitting large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.

From acciona.org we offer access to 100% clean energy, through solar home systems. Now, they can have access to electricity with dignity. This programme replicates and adapts the service provision model of those already implemented in other countries, for which we have created an alliance with the Ayala Foundation, which has been promoting sustainable livelihoods, education and youth leadership in the Philippines since 1961.

CONTEXT

  • At acciona.org we started our activity in the Philippines in 2021, after detecting that some barangays in the country have neither access to basic electricity service nor any expectation of connection to the conventional electricity grid in the short term.
  • After detecting this need, we started our Light at Home programme in Sibaltan, one of the 18 barangays of El Nido, a municipality in the island (province) of Palawan.
  • Sibaltan, which has a population of 2,083 people in about 520 households, is off the conventional electricity grid (Paleco).
  • Currently, over 60% of Sibaltan's population accesses electricity through gasoline-based methods.
  • With the Light at Home El Nido project, more than 20% of the households in barangay Sibaltan in the municipality of El Nido will have access to reliable, renewable and affordable electricity through solar home systems.
